Meerut: Shoplifter Hides ₹2,500 Ghee in Pants; Caught by Alert Staff at Railway Road
A man who had recently returned from Australia was caught stealing expensive grocery items from a store on Railway Road in the Sadar Bazaar area on Monday evening. The accused allegedly hid stolen items inside his pants and attempted to pay only for a packet of Maggi before being caught by alert store employees.
According to store staff, they had been monitoring the suspect for several days after CCTV footage earlier showed him stealing on multiple occasions, though his identity was then unknown. On Monday, employees closely watched his movements and caught him red-handed while he was trying to leave the store.
The accused has been identified as Ashwini alias Ashu Bhatia, a resident of Moti Nagar. In a video recorded by store staff, he is seen admitting his guilt. He claimed he had spent a month in Australia on a tourist visa and returned to India just a week ago. When questioned about the thefts, he said he was going through financial difficulties, though he failed to give a clear reason for his actions.
Store employees recovered cow ghee worth around ₹2,500, a honey container worth ₹500, along with ketchup and other grocery items from his possession. The accused also confessed to stealing tea leaves three times from the same store and once from another store on Meerut Road.
The incident was recorded on video and handed over to the Sadar Bazaar police, who have taken the accused into custody and initiated further legal action.
