Jaunpur: Two Serving Constables Suspended for Allegedly Stealing ₹1.62 Lakh iPhone from Showroom
Two serving police constables in Jaunpur have been suspended after CCTV footage allegedly captured them stealing an expensive iPhone from a mobile showroom in the Line Bazar police station area.
The incident took place on February 7 at around 2 p.m. at a mobile showroom near JC’s intersection. According to shop owner Shivam, the two constables entered the store posing as customers and asked a female staff member to show them various iPhone models. They reportedly spent nearly 20 minutes examining the phones before saying they were not interested and leaving the shop.
Old Phone Left Behind, New One Missing
Later, the shop owner noticed that an iPhone 15 Max worth ₹1.62 lakh was missing. Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, he allegedly saw one of the constables slipping the new phone into his pocket while leaving behind his old iPhone 13 Pro as a decoy.
Shivam shared the CCTV clip in a WhatsApp group with around 200 people, after which the individuals were identified as police personnel. He then filed a written complaint and personally met the City Superintendent of Police, presenting the footage.
Phone Recovered, Inquiry Ordered
Based on the complaint, a case was registered and an investigation was launched. The stolen phone was recovered on Sunday and returned to the shop owner.
Shivam also informed police that one of the accused constables had previously frequented the area and had studied at a digital library operating above his shop about a year ago.
City SP Ayush Srivastava confirmed that both constables — Dhananjay Bind and Mithilesh Yadav — have been suspended with immediate effect.
“Orders have been issued for a departmental inquiry against both personnel,” the SP said.
Further investigation is ongoing.
