Dowry Death Shock in Prayagraj: Married Woman’s Body Found in Canal, Husband and In-Laws Booked


The body of an unidentified young woman found in a canal in the Mauaima police station area of Prayagraj has been identified as Muskan Mishra (22). Following identification, police have registered a dowry death case against four members of her in-laws’ family, including her husband.


Muskan, a resident of Melha village under Baharia police station limits, was married on February 28, 2023, to Dheeraj Mishra of Barhada village in Pratapgarh district. Her parents identified her body after seeing photographs circulated on social media.


Muskan’s brother, Sunil Mishra, alleged that she was continuously harassed for dowry after marriage. Based on his complaint, police have named husband Dheeraj Mishra, father-in-law Pushkar Mishra, brother-in-law Neeraj Mishra and sister-in-law Riya Mishra, accusing them of killing Muskan and dumping her body in the canal.


According to Sunil, he received a call from Muskan’s in-laws on the evening of February 5 claiming she was missing. Her mobile phone was switched off after 10 pm the same night. Earlier, the in-laws had lodged a missing complaint, alleging that Muskan had left the house with jewellery.


On Friday morning, Muskan’s body was found on the Sharda Sahayak Canal track near Bhawanigarh Tilai Bazaar, causing panic in the area. After identification, Mauaima police registered a case and detained the father-in-law and brother-in-law for questioning.


A videographed post-mortem conducted by a panel of doctors on Saturday indicated death by hanging. Apart from a ligature mark on the neck, no other injuries were found. Police said the death likely occurred on the night of February 5. Further investigation is underway.
