40 Patients Attempt Escape from Govt De-Addiction Centre in Mohali’s Sector 66, Situation Brought Under Control

A shocking incident was reported from Sector 66, Mohali, where around 40 patients attempted to escape from a government-run drug de-addiction centre on Monday afternoon.

According to officials, the incident occurred at around 3:15 pm when patients gathered during treatment and tried to force open a wooden door to flee the facility. Sensing the danger, security guards immediately locked the door from outside, preventing it from opening despite repeated attempts by the patients.

Meanwhile, two police personnel deployed at the centre shifted the patients to the rear ward and secured the iron gate, bringing the situation under control. Police were informed, and a daily diary (DDR) entry has been registered.

Officials said that doctors and staff were present outside at the time of the incident. They added that had the door opened, patients could have escaped and posed serious risks to public and staff safety.

Staff members revealed that many patients are booked under the NDPS Act and have a history of escape attempts. They warned that such incidents endanger the lives of doctors, guards, and staff. Currently, only two police personnel are deployed for security at the centre.

They also recalled a previous incident where patients created a ruckus at night, attacked security guards, and two patients allegedly escaped through the roof.

Officials explained that earlier, patients were admitted to de-addiction centres voluntarily and were free to leave. However, under the Punjab government’s “War Against Drugs” campaign, drug users booked under Section 27 of the NDPS Act are now sent to de-addiction centres for treatment instead of jail, leading to increased unrest during treatment.

Phase 11 SHO Aman Singh clarified that no patient escaped, only an attempt was made. He said patients often become irritable when medication dosages are reduced during treatment. He assured that the police are providing full support for staff safety and stressed the need for experienced and patient handling in such cases.
