Two Women Marry by Consent in Chhatarpur, Families Protest; Police Station Turns Battleground


A sensitive and controversial case has emerged from the Civil Lines police station area of Chhatarpur district, where two adult women entered into a same-sex marriage with mutual consent, triggering protests by their families and a tense situation at the police station.


According to reports, Anjali Raikwar (23), daughter of Anand Raikwar and a resident of Bajrang Nagar, and Mohini Kushwaha (21), daughter of Rakesh Kushwaha and a resident of Durga Colony, had been in a relationship for the past five years. Anjali stated that on January 12, the two women visited Bageshwar Dham, where they vowed to live together and married with mutual consent.


Following their departure from home, the families lodged missing person complaints at the Civil Lines police station. The situation escalated after Mohini’s family learned about the marriage and reached the police station, allegedly attempting to forcibly take her back home.


A heated argument broke out between the two sides, leading to a tense atmosphere at the police station. To maintain law and order, the police made both women sit inside the police station and informed senior अधिकारियों about the developments.


Police officials stated that both Anjali and Mohini are adults and have clearly expressed their desire to live together of their own free will. Authorities said all legal aspects are being examined, and counselling of both parties is underway.


Notably, this is the third such case of same-sex marriage reported in Chhatarpur district. Similar incidents have earlier come to light from Dauria and Mausania villages under the Naugaon police station area. Police said further action will be taken under the guidance of senior officers.
