Sankranti Turns Fatal: Software Engineers Die After Drinking Contest in Andhra Village

Two software engineers died in Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh after excessive alcohol consumption during Sankranti celebrations.

The victims, Manikumar (35) and Pushparaj (22/27), had returned to their native village Bandavaddipalle in Kambhampalle mandal to celebrate the festival. On the night of the incident, they allegedly consumed large quantities of beer with friends as part of a drinking competition. Both suddenly fell ill and collapsed.

They were rushed to a nearby clinic in the Peeleru rural area, where doctors declared them brought dead. Police registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC based on a complaint by Manikumar’s father. The exact cause of death is under investigation, with alcohol overdose, dehydration, or spurious liquor being suspected.

Manikumar, a software engineer, was married and is survived by his wife and a two-year-old son. Pushparaj was unmarried and worked in Bengaluru. The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the village during the festive season.
