Love Marriage Turns Fatal: IVRI Contract Worker Strangled, Death Made to Look Like Suicide in Bareilly

A shocking murder case has come to light in Bareilly, where a 33-year-old contract worker was allegedly strangled to death and later hanged to pass it off as suicide, just two months after a love marriage.

The deceased, Jitendra Yadav, was working as a contract employee at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI). His body was found hanging from a noose in a rented room in Kailashpuram, Izzatnagar, on January 26.

At first, Jitendra’s family believed he had died by suicide due to alleged harassment by his wife Jyoti Prajapati and her family. Based on this, the Izzatnagar police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Jyoti, her father Kalicharan, mother Chameli, and brother Deepak.

The case took a dramatic turn after the postmortem report confirmed strangulation as the cause of death, shocking both the police and the victim’s family. Following this, SP City Manush Pareek ordered the addition of murder charges, suspecting that Jitendra was first strangled and then hanged to make the death appear like suicide.

According to Ajay Kumar, Jitendra’s brother and a resident of Bhaupura village in Etawah, Jyoti had allegedly developed a relationship with Jitendra with the intention of seizing his ancestral property. The two had known each other for nearly seven years before marrying two months ago.

After the marriage, Jyoti allegedly began pressurising Jitendra to sell his ancestral land to buy a house and a car. Ajay alleged that Jyoti, along with her parents and brother, continuously harassed Jitendra over the issue.

Jitendra had reportedly told his family that he did not want to sell the land and had expressed fears that something untoward might happen to him. It was also alleged that Jyoti threatened to implicate him in a false dowry case whenever he resisted.

Police sources said Jyoti’s family was unhappy with the inter-caste marriage, which is also being probed as a possible motive behind the killing.

Women police officers led by Inspector Vijendra Singh are currently interrogating Jyoti, while her family members have also been summoned. Police are investigating how the murder was carried out within such a short period after the marriage.

Further investigation is ongoing.
