Laughing Accused Surrenders in Court: Bareilly Cafe Assault Mastermind Walks Free of Fear After 20 Days on the Run
Twenty days after Muslim students were allegedly assaulted at a cafe in Bareilly, the main accused, Rishabh Thakur, surrendered before a court on Saturday. He appeared before the ACJM-5 court and was sent to 14 days of judicial custody.
A video of Rishabh’s surrender has surfaced, showing him arriving at court calmly, laughing and chatting with friends, with no visible fear of police action. Police had been searching for him after arresting his accomplices and sending them to jail.
The incident occurred on December 27 at The Den Cafe and Restaurant in Rajendra Nagar, where a B.Sc Nursing student from Badaun was celebrating her birthday with 10 friends, including six girls and four boys. During the celebration, over 25 Bajrang Dal activists allegedly entered the cafe, accused the group of “love jihad,” and assaulted the boys present.
The woman student told police that it was merely a birthday party and no objectionable activity was taking place. Despite her repeated pleas, her friends were beaten, creating panic and chaos inside the restaurant. Police from Dial 112 and Prem Nagar station reached the spot and later found the allegations to be false.
Following the incident, five accused—Prince, Akash, Ashish, Mirdun and Deepak—were arrested based on complaints by the cafe owner, Shailendra Gangwar, and others. The investigation identified Rishabh Thakur as the main accused who allegedly instigated the violence by making fabricated allegations.
As the case gained national attention after videos of the assault went viral, Bajrang Dal distanced itself from Rishabh. Metropolitan Coordinator Kewala Nand Gaur expelled him from the organisation on December 27, stating that such conduct violated the group’s rules.
Despite police claiming to conduct raids, Rishabh remained absconding for nearly three weeks and continued to stay active on social media, asserting his innocence. On Saturday, he surrendered in court at his convenience.
Police said their investigation revealed that the accused took the law into their own hands and spread fear based on suspicion. Further legal proceedings in the case are underway.
