Late for Exam, Humiliated Over Periods: Hyderabad Student’s Shocking Death Sparks Outrage

Hyderabad: A 16-year-old intermediate student, Varshini, studying first-year MPC at Dr Munaga Rama Mohan Rao Government Girls Junior College, Maredpally, died after allegedly being humiliated by lecturers for arriving late to an examination.

According to the family, Varshini reached the exam hall late and explained that the delay was due to her menstrual period. However, two lecturers—Madhura and Srilakshmi—allegedly refused her entry, accused her of “acting,” and demanded proof in front of other students. Distressed by the incident, Varshini returned to her home in Maruti Nagar, Malkajgiri, where she collapsed and lost consciousness.

She was rushed to Gandhi Hospital, where doctors confirmed she had suffered a brain clot due to severe mental stress and hypertension. She died while undergoing treatment on Thursday night.

Following the incident, family members and student organisations staged a protest at the college. Police registered a case against the two lecturers under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for harassment and abetment. A departmental inquiry committee has also been constituted.

Political leaders, including BRS leaders and former Beverages Corporation chairman Gajjela Nagesh, visited the family and extended financial assistance. Demands have been raised for compensation and a government job for a family member.
