Khatushyamji Police Bust Massive Family Gang: 18 Arrested for Chain Snatching on New Year
Amid a rise in chain-snatching incidents in Khatushyamji, Sikar police have cracked down on an organised gang and arrested 18 accused, including husbands, wives and close relatives. The arrests followed a meticulously planned operation during New Year celebrations, which ensured that not a single chain-snatching incident was reported despite heavy crowds.
Station House Officer (SHO) Pawan Kumar Choubey said that several incidents of chain snatching and pickpocketing had earlier been reported during Ekadashi and monthly fairs. Learning from past cases, a special strategy was drawn up for New Year in coordination with DST team in-charge Virendra Yadav, Kailash Chand Yadav and other police personnel.
Considering the large influx of devotees, police personnel in plainclothes were deployed from the temple entry points to the exit areas. Based on the modus operandi seen in previous crimes, suspicious movements were closely monitored. The gang members were detained from the crowd and later confessed to their involvement during interrogation.
According to police, the gang had been active in Khatushyamji for the past seven to eight months. They would arrive every month on crowded days like Ekadashi in rented vehicles, target devotees in congested areas such as the temple exit and main complex, and flee immediately after committing the crime, often escaping detection due to the rush.
Police said the crimes were executed primarily by women. The women would move in groups, surround victims, engage them in conversation and snatch gold chains. The stolen jewellery was either quickly passed on to male accomplices or the women would flee, making recovery difficult even if they were caught.
Those arrested include Bhumika (20), wife of Deepak; Pinky (27), wife of Manoj Bawaria; Pooja (28), wife of Sonu; Tina (29), wife of Vikas; Sharmila (37), wife of Ramchandra; Jyoti (30), wife of Rajkumar; Kajal (20), daughter of Sundarlal; Rakhi Kumari (23), daughter of Ramesh; Darshana (40), wife of Raju; Komal (22), daughter of Ramanand; Jaipal (62), son of Chandrabhan; Rajkumar (30), son of Jaipal; Jaikaran (34), son of Ramesh; Mohan Singh (24), son of Bhup Singh; Deepak (22), son of Raju; Bharatpal (21), son of Rajesh; Rohit (24), son of Kishanpal; and Praveen Chauhan (23), son of Umed Singh. The accused are residents of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR, and belong to the same extended family network.
SHO Choubey stated that despite massive crowds on New Year’s Day, no chain-snatching incident occurred due to heightened vigilance and coordinated policing. The gang was apprehended as part of a planned operation carried out within the crowd.
