Jhansi’s First Woman Auto Driver Shot Dead, Murder Made to Look Like Accident: Family

Jhansi’s first female auto driver, Anita Chaudhary (40), was found dead in a pool of blood near her overturned auto-rickshaw in the Navabad police station area early Sunday morning, triggering shock and outrage. The incident occurred around 1:30 am near Sukwan-Dhukwan Colony on Station Road.

Initially reported as a road accident, the case took a dramatic turn after a post-mortem confirmed that Anita was shot in the temple, with the bullet lodged in her neck. Police said the post-mortem was conducted by a panel of two doctors and videographed. The body was later handed over to the family.

Anita had left her home around 9:30 pm on Saturday to drive her auto. Her family alleged she had an argument with a young man known to her, who later killed her, robbed her jewellery and mobile phone, and tried to pass off the murder as an accident. The family also claimed two gunshots were fired.

City CO Laxmikant Gautam said police initially received information about an accident, but the family’s allegations are being thoroughly investigated. Based on the complaint, a murder case has been registered against Mukesh Jha, his brother-in-law, and others. Police said the accused will be arrested soon.

Anita, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar in Talpura, was widely known for breaking barriers by becoming Jhansi’s first woman auto driver in 2021. She was honoured by several organisations and senior police officers and inspired many women to take up auto and e-rickshaw driving. She is survived by three children.
