Jhansi Double Tragedy: 19-Year-Old Ends Life Over Marital Dispute, Neighbor Dies of Shock

A tragic incident from Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, has left two families devastated after a 19-year-old man died by suicide, followed by the shock-induced death of an 80-year-old woman from the neighbourhood. The case, which has sparked widespread grief and discussion, is being investigated by the police.

The deceased has been identified as Dhruvraj Kushwaha, a resident near Sagar Gate under the Kotwali police station area. According to family members, Dhruvraj met Preeti, a resident of the Churu region in Jaipur district, Rajasthan, through Instagram. Their friendship gradually turned into a relationship. Despite opposition from his family, Dhruvraj insisted on marrying her and allegedly threatened suicide, following which the families agreed. The couple got married in a temple in May 2025.

Family members allege that soon after the marriage, disputes began over financial issues. They claimed that Preeti made increasing demands for expensive clothes, shopping, travel and outings, which Dhruvraj could not afford due to his limited income. Dhruvraj’s sister, Vishakha Kushwaha, alleged that Preeti pressured him to earn more money and threatened to remarry if he failed to meet her expectations.

According to the family, matters worsened when Preeti went to her parental home on December 13–14 and did not return. Last Monday, the couple allegedly had a heated argument over the phone. During the call, Dhruvraj reportedly threatened to hang himself if his demands were not met, to which his wife allegedly responded, “Then hang yourself.” Relatives claim Dhruvraj was deeply distressed after the conversation.

On January 7, Dhruvraj’s father Rambabu, his mother and sisters Vishakha and Princy went to the Kamakhya Devi temple. Dhruvraj was asked to accompany them but stayed back. Family members alleged that his wife had called him and advised him not to go. The family remained in contact with him by phone, but his mobile was switched off for two days.

When the family returned home on Wednesday morning, they found the house locked from inside. After opening the door, they found Dhruvraj hanging in his room. Police were informed immediately. The Kotwali police took the body into custody, sent it for post-mortem examination and initiated an investigation.

In a tragic twist, an 80-year-old woman from the neighbourhood, Benibai, died of shock after hearing about the suicide. Her son Rambabu said there was confusion as Dhruvraj’s father shared the same name. When people said “Rambabu’s son has hanged himself,” Benibai mistakenly believed it was her own son’s child. She reportedly fell ill due to the shock and died. The family said she had been healthy before the incident.

The twin deaths have cast a pall of gloom over the locality. Police said the case is being investigated from all angles and that the family’s allegations are being taken seriously.
