Jhabua Swing Accident: Dragon Ride Overturns at Utkrisht Vidyalaya Playground; 14 Students Hospitalized
Jhabua: A major accident occurred on Monday evening at a 20-day fair being held at the Utkrisht Vidyalaya playground in Jhabua city, when a dragon swing collapsed, injuring 14 school students.
According to initial reports, the accident took place due to the swing being overloaded, as too many students were seated on it at the same time. The excess weight allegedly caused the structure to lose balance and tip over, triggering panic at the fairground. Eyewitnesses reported chaos at the scene, with screams and cries echoing as the swing collapsed.
All the injured students were immediately shifted to the district hospital. Hospital authorities confirmed that the injured include 13 girls and one boy, and stated that all are currently in stable condition.
Following the incident, the fair was shut down. The event had begun on January 1 and was scheduled to continue until January 20, but was closed a day earlier on January 19 due to safety concerns. Reports indicate that around 600 school students were being brought to the fair in rotation, and the rides were free of cost for them.
After receiving information about the accident, Collector Neha Meena visited the district hospital and reviewed the condition of the injured students. She directed doctors to ensure there was no negligence in treatment and that the children received the best possible medical care.
Taking serious note of the incident, the Collector ordered a magisterial inquiry. A high-level investigation team has been constituted, comprising the Additional Collector, Additional Superintendent of Police, Executive Engineer (PWD), Executive Engineer of the West Zone Electricity Distribution Company, and the Project Officer of the Urban Development Agency. The team has been tasked with conducting a detailed investigation and submitting a report.
Preliminary findings suggest that over-capacity seating on the dragon swing led to the collapse. The Collector has stated that strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence or safety violations.
The fair is organised annually by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in the name of Saint Khum Singh Maharaj.
