Hit, Dragged, Filmed: E-Rickshaw Driver Hung on Jeep Bonnet in Broad Daylight
Jagran, Bilaspur: A shocking incident was reported from the Nainital Highway in Bilaspur, where a jeep driver dragged an e-rickshaw driver by hanging him on the bonnet of his vehicle. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 10 am on Wednesday at the Kemri intersection on the Nainital Highway. A speeding jeep collided head-on with an e-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction, causing the e-rickshaw to overturn. The driver of the e-rickshaw, Shabbu, a resident of Bhatpura Taran village, sustained injuries and started bleeding from the nose.
After the collision, the jeep driver attempted to flee the spot. When the injured e-rickshaw driver tried to stop him by standing in front of the jeep, the driver allegedly pulled him onto the bonnet and dragged him for about 50 metres towards Rampur Road.
Eyewitnesses said that despite people raising an alarm, the jeep driver continued driving and even spun the vehicle in circles, leaving the injured man hanging with his legs on the bonnet.
The jeep was finally stopped after a crowd gathered and protested, saving the e-rickshaw driver. Several bystanders recorded the incident on their mobile phones, and the video soon surfaced online.
On receiving information, Kotwali police reached the spot and detained the jeep driver. However, the police reportedly kept the matter under wraps for the entire day. The accused was later challaned for disturbing the peace.
Inspector-in-charge Balwan Singh identified the jeep driver as Manpreet Singh, a resident of Mohalla Sant Colony in the city. Following a compromise between both parties, the accused was charged under breach of peace sections, produced before the SDM court, and later released on bail.
Reacting to the incident, Prem Naresh Valmiki, president of the Rashtriya Garib Kalyan Sangh, said he was aware of the case. He clarified that the injured e-rickshaw driver was not associated with the union linked to his organisation, but assured that help would be provided if the victim approached them.
