Held Captive for 3 Weeks: Pastor Accused of Detaining Woman, Nihangs Step In After Police Inaction

Ludhiana/Khanna: A pastor in Punjab’s Ludhiana district has been accused of illegally confining a woman at his house for nearly three weeks on the pretext of taking her to church. The incident came to light in Khanna after the woman’s family alleged police inaction and sought help from Nihangs to rescue her.

According to the family, the incident began on January 7 when Pastor Raman Kumar took the woman from her home, claiming he would take her to attend a church service. However, instead of dropping her back, he allegedly kept her confined in a room at his house and also took her to Ludhiana during this period.

Family members alleged that the woman was not allowed to move freely, meet anyone in private, and was subjected to mental harassment. They said their suspicion grew as they were repeatedly denied direct access to her.

The family further claimed they submitted a written complaint to the police on January 9, but no effective action was taken. A relative alleged that repeated requests to the police were ignored, allowing the confinement to continue.

Tensions escalated on Tuesday when the woman’s mother managed to meet her briefly in Khanna. The meeting reportedly lasted about two minutes and took place in the presence of others. During the interaction, the woman allegedly signalled that she was being held against her will.

Following this, the family approached members of the Nihangs for help. Jathedar Sarabjit Singh Khalsa of the Taruna Dal said that after hearing the family’s account, he and a group of Nihangs went to the pastor’s house and intervened, bringing the woman out safely.

After the incident drew public attention, police reached the spot and detained Pastor Raman Kumar for questioning. The woman’s father said he had visited the police station multiple times over the past three weeks and alleged that the rescue was possible only after external intervention.

Khanna DSP Vinod Kumar confirmed that a case has been registered against the pastor and that an investigation is underway. He said strict action would be taken after verifying all facts. Police also stated that the woman is safe and that her statement will be crucial to the probe.
