Female Sub-Inspector Files Dowry Case, Husband Claims He Made Her an Officer

A female sub-inspector posted at Hafizganj police station in Bareilly has filed a dowry harassment case against her husband and in-laws in Hapur, triggering sharp debate and counter-allegations.

The accused husband, Gulshan, a resident of Pootha Hussainpur village in Hapur, claims the case is false and motivated. He alleges that he supported his wife, Payal Rani, during her studies and helped her clear competitive exams, following which she became a sub-inspector in 2023. Gulshan currently works as a daily wage labourer while preparing to join the Indian Army.

According to police, the couple met in 2016, had a court marriage in 2021, and later solemnised the marriage as per Hindu rituals on December 2, 2022, without dowry. After Payal’s posting in Bareilly, differences reportedly arose between the couple.

On November 13, 2025, Payal Rani submitted a complaint to the Hapur Superintendent of Police, alleging that her husband and in-laws demanded ₹10 lakh in cash and a car. She accused them of mental and physical harassment, assault, and threats.

Following the SP’s directions, Hapur Nagar police registered an FIR against Gulshan and six family members under dowry harassment and other relevant sections.

Hapur SP Gyananjay Singh said a case has been registered and the matter is under investigation. Statements from both sides are being recorded and evidence is being examined.
