FASTag Dispute Turns Violent: Advocate Beaten, Forced to Apologise at Barabanki Toll Plaza

An advocate of the Lucknow High Court was allegedly assaulted by toll plaza staff following a dispute over a FASTag balance at the Gotona (Bara) Toll Plaza on the Lucknow–Sultanpur Highway in Barabanki district, Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, and triggered widespread outrage among the legal fraternity.

The victim, Ratnesh Shukla, a resident of Pratapgarh, was on his way to court when an argument broke out with toll workers over a FASTag issue. According to the complaint, toll staff used abusive language, surrounded him, chased him and assaulted him. Viral video clips from the scene show several toll employees forcing the advocate to apologise while continuing to beat him.

Shukla sustained serious injuries in the assault and was taken to a nearby Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment. Based on his complaint, Haidergarh police registered a case and detained three toll plaza employees for questioning.

The incident led to strong protests by advocates, with hundreds of lawyers staging a demonstration outside the Haidergarh police station. The protest caused significant traffic congestion on the national highway for several hours.

Haidergarh Station House Officer (SHO) Abhimanyu Mall confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated and efforts are underway to identify and arrest other suspects involved in the assault.
