‘Fake Treasure’ Exposed in Rajasthan: Gold-Plated Brass Bricks Found in 150-kg Pot, Two Arrested

What was believed to be a cache of ancient treasure in Rajasthan’s Tonk district has turned out to be an elaborate fraud. Police have arrested two men after a silver pot unearthed near Niwai was found to contain fake gold bricks and counterfeit jewellery.

The pot, weighing around 150 kg, was discovered during land excavation in a village pasture, triggering rumours of hidden wealth and drawing large crowds. However, police investigation revealed that the vessel contained brass bricks coated with gold plating weighing over 5 kg, fake biscuits and old artificial jewellery that had been deliberately buried.

The accused, Mukesh Meena (32) and Abhishek Meena (24) of Seedra village, allegedly planted the items to exploit villagers’ greed. Mukesh posed as “Tatkal Aghori Maharaj” on social media and lured people with claims of dhan siddhi (hidden treasure), performing fake rituals and demanding money while advising victims not to open the pot for days.

Niwai DSP Ravi Prakash Sharma confirmed the arrests and said the recovered items were not gold. Tonk SP Rajesh Kumar Meena has constituted a team to probe possible occult links and the wider network. The pot has been sealed and kept in the sub-treasury for further examination.
