East Godavari | Woman Constable Praised for Clearing Traffic with Baby in Arms to Help Ambulance
A woman police constable, A. Jayasanthi (also known as Amudala Jaya Shanti), has been widely praised for her humanitarian act after she cleared heavy traffic to allow an ambulance to pass on the Samarlakota–Kakinada road on Saturday night. A video showing her regulating traffic while carrying her young son in her arms went viral on Sunday, drawing admiration from across the state.
According to an official release, East Godavari Superintendent of Police D. Narasimha Kishore said the constable acted swiftly after noticing an ambulance stuck in a massive traffic jam caused by the Sankranti festival rush near the Samalkota railway station road. At the time, Ms. Jayasanthi was returning home after completing her duty and was off duty and outside her jurisdiction.
Ms. Jayasanthi, who is posted at Rangampeta Police Station, initially handed over her two-and-a-half-year-old child to fellow passengers and began clearing traffic on her own. For nearly 40 minutes, she managed the congestion single-handedly. When her baby woke up and became restless, she resumed traffic regulation while carrying the child, continuing her efforts for another one-and-a-half hours until additional police personnel arrived after being alerted.
Despite the area not falling under her official jurisdiction, she continued working on humanitarian grounds, ensuring that the ambulance could move forward safely.
Appreciating her exemplary service, SP D. Narasimha Kishore announced a special reward for Ms. Jayasanthi, stating that her actions reflected exceptional commitment, social responsibility, and compassion beyond the call of duty.
Speaking later, Ms. Jayasanthi said she felt relieved and happy that she was able to clear the traffic and help the ambulance reach its destination, even though it took nearly two hours of sustained effort.
Her act—balancing motherhood and public service under challenging circumstances—has won widespread public appreciation and is being hailed as a powerful example of dedication and humanity within the police force.
