Deoria Mazar Demolition: 50-Year-Old Shrine Removed by Administration | Court Order


The Deoria district administration on Sunday demolished a nearly 50-year-old shrine, Hazrat Shaheed Syed Abdul Gani Shah Baba Mazar, located near the Gorakhpur Road overbridge in Uttar Pradesh, following an order of the Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Court.


Additional District Government Counsel (Revenue) Jaideep Gupta said the SDM court had declared the land as barren government property. During the hearings, the defence was directed to submit a map and documents establishing when the shrine was constructed, but no records were produced. Subsequently, the court ordered demolition of the structure.


The case was initiated following a complaint filed in 2019, reportedly by Sadar BJP MLA Dr Shalabh Mani Tripathi. After the complaint, officials from the revenue department, public works department and other agencies conducted inspections. A notice opposing the demolition was issued to the management committee on December 14, 2019, and the matter remained pending with multiple hearings before being finally decided by the SDM court on Friday.


Demolition work began around noon on Sunday after the area was evacuated and cordoned off. The municipal council carried out the operation using three bulldozers, which continued for nearly six hours. Officials said the main gate, boundary wall, three shops and the dome of the shrine had been demolished, while the basement was to be taken down next.


Around 300 police personnel from six police stations were deployed at the site to prevent any untoward incident. SDM Shruti Sharma, Sadar Kotwal Vinod Singh and senior officials were present to maintain law and order.


Municipal authorities stated that the shrine had been constructed on government-owned wasteland, classified as agricultural and barren land, and was not legally recognised.


The administration maintained that the action was taken strictly in compliance with the court’s order.
