Delhi vs Mumbai Debate Reignited After Viral Reddit Post Calls Delhi More Livable
A detailed Reddit post by a professional who recently lived in Mumbai after spending most of his life in Delhi NCR has gone viral, once again fuelling the long-running Delhi vs Mumbai debate. Shared on Reddit’s Delhi Community, the post compares the two cities on cost of living, infrastructure, healthcare, commuting, and the often-cited “spirit of Mumbai.”
The author described Mumbai’s cost of living as his biggest shock, calling the city “insanely expensive.” He claimed he was quoted ₹25,000 for a single-sharing room “barely big enough to stand in,” while friends in Delhi NCR pay ₹12,000–₹15,000 for an entire 1RK or 1BHK. According to him, even suburban Mumbai rents for a 1BHK easily cross ₹40,000, whereas the same budget in Delhi can fetch a spacious 3BHK or even an independent house.
Despite staying in a premium locality like Juhu, he said daily commuting involved traffic congestion, bad smells, and constant chaos. He added that traffic becomes unbearable during monsoons, with flooding affecting not just slums but also middle-class and upscale areas.
The post also criticised Mumbai’s healthcare system, alleging that consultation fees are significantly higher than in Delhi, while doctors in the national capital appear academically stronger on average.
A major point of contention was what the author called “denial” among long-time Mumbaikars. He wrote that overcrowded local trains are romanticised as “love” and “spirit,” crushing rents are worn as a badge of pride, and slums are framed as symbols of resilience rather than systemic failure.
The post triggered intense reactions online. Several users agreed with the criticism, with one saying people who deny Mumbai’s flaws prefer to stay in denial. Another user claimed there is “absolutely no comparison” with Delhi’s infrastructure, food, and public transport.
Interestingly, some Mumbaikars also echoed similar sentiments. One user wrote that after spending a year in Delhi, they now agree with many of the criticisms of Mumbai. Another lifelong resident admitted loving the city for personal memories but feeling exhausted by current conditions.
The debate also spilled into stereotypes about people from both cities. While one user called Delhiites “fake,” others strongly defended Delhi, saying its people are straightforward and honest, even if sometimes rude.
As the post continues to gain traction, it has once again highlighted the stark contrasts—and emotional loyalties—attached to India’s two biggest metros.
