Dalit Youth Brutally Humiliated in Bareilly: Landlord Beats Him, Shaves Head and Eyebrows Over Money Dispute
A shocking case of assault and caste-based humiliation has surfaced from Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, where a Dalit youth was allegedly beaten, tonsured and paraded after he demanded the return of money he had lent to his landlord.
The incident took place 4–5 days ago in Gela Tanda village under the Nawabganj police station area. A video of the incident has now gone viral on social media. The footage shows the victim walking through village lanes with his face and head smeared with soot. He is seen carrying a bag in one hand while trying to manage his remaining hair with the other.
The victim, identified as Pappu Diwakar, a resident of Baheri Gursauli, told police that he had been living as a tenant for the past three months at the house of Chandrasen in Gela Tanda village. He alleged that a few months ago, Chandrasen had taken ₹4.5 lakh from him in the name of purchasing a tractor.
“When I asked for my money back, Chandrasen, his sons Pappu and Godhan, along with four to five others, brutally beat me. They abused me using casteist slurs, threatened to kill me, shaved my head, moustache and eyebrows with a razor, and smeared soot on my face,” the victim stated. He said the incident left him mentally traumatised, after which he returned to his native village the same day.
Based on the complaint and the viral video, police registered FIR No. 29/2026 on January 17 under Sections 316(2), 352, 115(2), 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 3(1)(d), 3(1)(dh) and 3(2)(va) of the SC/ST Act.
Nawabganj Inspector Arun Kumar Srivastava said that three named accused—Chandrasen (50), and his sons Pappu (45) and Godhan (35)—have been taken into custody and are being interrogated. He added that the video will be made part of the investigation and strict action will be ensured.
SP (North) Bareilly, Mukesh Chandra Mishra, said police are taking the matter seriously and assured that the case will be investigated thoroughly and the guilty will not be spared.
