Bareilly City Magistrate Quits in Protest: ‘Attack on Brahmin Batuks Shook My Soul’
Bareilly City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri, a 2016-batch PCS officer, resigned from his post on January 25–26, 2026, triggering a stir in administrative circles. He publicly wrote “Resign” next to his name on his office board and submitted a five-page resignation letter, effective immediately.
Agnihotri also shared his decision on social media ahead of Republic Day. In his resignation letter, he expressed deep anguish over the alleged assault on Brahmin disciples (batuks) of Jyotirmath Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati during the Magh Mela in Prayagraj. He alleged that the batuks were beaten and their shikhas were forcibly cut.
The officer strongly criticised the Uttar Pradesh government, accusing it of pursuing anti-Brahmin policies, and opposed the UGC Regulations 2026 related to anti-discrimination in higher education. He also alleged that the Centre was dividing Hindu society.
The incident at the Magh Mela reportedly occurred after the Shankaracharya’s group allegedly entered a no-vehicle zone without permission, leading to a confrontation with authorities. Agnihotri claimed there was a conspiracy against him following his criticism after the Mahakumbh. In his letter, he stated that the Prayagraj incident “shakes the soul of an ordinary Brahmin.”
