Affair Turns Fatal: Wife, Lover Arrested for Brutal Hammer Murder of Bareilly Farmer

Bareilly Police have claimed to have cracked the murder case of a 50-year-old farmer who was beaten to death with a hammer while sleeping at his home in Bhuda village under the Sirauli police station area. The police have arrested the victim’s wife, Mamta Devi (32), and her alleged lover, Hotam Singh (30), in connection with the crime.

According to police, the murder took place on Saturday night. The victim, Suresh Pal Singh, was asleep on a cot after dinner when Mamta secretly called Hotam Singh to the house. Police said Mamta held her husband down while Hotam repeatedly struck him on the head and face with a hammer, killing him on the spot. Hotam fled with the weapon, while Mamta stayed back to avoid suspicion.

SP (South) Anshika Verma said the couple had been married for 11 years and had three children. Mamta and Hotam were allegedly in an illicit relationship for the past three years. Suresh Pal had learnt about the affair, leading to frequent disputes and confrontations. Police said Mamta conspired to kill her husband after repeated arguments and alleged assaults.

To mislead investigators, Mamta allegedly woke her 11-year-old son Arjun and asked him to inform the village head. She later claimed she found her husband lying in a pool of blood when she woke up to use the toilet. Police said she destroyed her mobile SIM card to erase call records, while Hotam washed the hammer and hid it at his house.

The victim’s brother, Chandrapal, told police that he was informed around 10.30 pm that Suresh Pal was in critical condition. When he reached the house, he found his brother dead with severe head injuries, while Mamta was sitting nearby and refused to explain what had happened. A postmortem later confirmed death due to repeated blows from a heavy object.

During interrogation, Mamta allegedly broke down and confessed. Call records, chats, and audio-video files recovered from her phone corroborated the police theory. Hotam Singh was arrested following a stakeout at Shivpuri Tiraha on the Mirganj road, and the blood-stained hammer was recovered on his disclosure.

Police said the accused had earlier planned to elope but later decided to eliminate Suresh Pal due to fear of social backlash. An FIR has been registered under BNS Section 103 (murder). Both accused were produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to jail.
