AAP Sarpanch Shot Dead at Wedding in Amritsar, Second High-Profile Killing in Punjab in Four Days
Jarnail Singh, also reported as Jarmal Singh, a sarpanch from Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district and a member of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was shot dead on Sunday, January 5, 2026, at a wedding venue in Amritsar.
The incident occurred at the Marigold Resort wedding hall, where Singh had gone to attend a relative’s marriage. According to police, unidentified gunmen entered the venue and fired two shots at the back of his head. Panic broke out among guests, and Singh was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Amritsar Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagjeet Walia said the attackers appeared to have specifically targeted Singh. Police are scanning CCTV footage from the venue and nearby areas. All angles are being probed, including reports that Singh had received threats from gangsters in the past. No arrests have been made so far.
Reacting to the incident, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal termed the killing a “cold-blooded murder” and blamed what he called a failure of policing in Punjab. He linked the incident to other recent violent crimes in the state, including a murder in Moga and a shooting in Kapurthala.
The killing has sent shockwaves through Punjab’s political circles and has raised serious concerns over rising targeted violence in public places. Investigations are ongoing.
