‘18 Hours of Work, ₹10,000 Salary’: Imran Masood Raises Vande Bharat Staff Exploitation Issue on Train

Congress MP from Saharanpur, Imran Masood, has raised serious concerns over alleged exploitation of private staff working on the Vande Bharat Express, flagging the issue of railway privatisation and employee harassment.

While travelling on the Vande Bharat train, Masood interacted with cleaning and catering staff and listened to their grievances. According to him, private contractors are allegedly forcing workers to put in up to 18 hours of work daily while paying them only ₹10,000 per month, which is below the minimum wage.

Masood said the staff are being treated “like machines” and are left with barely three hours of sleep. He pointed out that while sleeper trains at least provide limited space to rest, Vande Bharat trains do not offer any resting space for staff.

Taking immediate action, the Congress MP asked his team to document the complaints and prepare a letter to the Railway Minister. He said the matter would be raised in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377, which allows MPs to highlight public interest issues directly before the ministry.

“Privatisation within the Railways is leading to severe harassment. The Railways is paying contractors, contractors are profiting, and poor workers are suffering,” Masood said.

He also directed that a separate question be prepared for the Lok Sabha and stated that if Vande Bharat services are managed properly, travel time on certain routes could be reduced by up to two hours. Masood has sought an appointment with the Railway Minister on February 28 to discuss the issue.

A video of the MP’s interaction with Vande Bharat staff has surfaced on social media, drawing attention to working conditions on premium trains.
