₹18 Crore Inside Job? Domestic Help Pull Off One of Bengaluru’s Biggest Jewellery Heists

A major theft has been reported from Bengaluru’s Marathahalli area, where gold, diamond, silver jewellery and cash worth around ₹18 crore were stolen from the residence of builder M R Shivakumar at ASK Lake Garden on Kempapura Main Road in Yamaluru.

According to police, the accused are a Nepalese couple, Dinesh (32) and his wife Kamala (25), who had joined the household as domestic workers barely 20 days before the incident.

The theft took place between 9 am and 12.30 pm on January 25, when no family members were at home. Shivakumar was out of the country on a trip to the Philippines, while his son Shimanth S Arjun (28), along with his wife and mother, had gone to attend a land worship ceremony at H Cross on the Hoskote–Chintamani Road.

Arjun stated in his complaint that around 12.38 pm, the family’s cook Ambika informed him that cupboard locks had been broken and valuables stolen. When the family rushed back, they found lockers on both the ground floor and first floor forcibly opened using an iron bar.

Police said about 11.5 kg of gold and diamond jewellery, nearly 5 kg of silver ornaments and ₹11.5 lakh in cash were stolen, taking the total value of the theft to approximately ₹18 crore.

Investigations revealed that Kamala had allegedly taken another house help outside on a pretext, after which Dinesh reportedly called five to six accomplices to the house. The gang is suspected to have switched off the UPS and disconnected the power supply to disable CCTV cameras before executing the theft.

The accused couple were hired as replacements for the previous domestic staff, Vikash and Maya, who had worked at the house for nine months and had planned to return to their native place. Despite repeated requests, Dinesh and Kamala had not submitted identity proofs and had agreed to work for a monthly salary of ₹27,000.

Police suspect the involvement of a Nepalese gang and believe the crime was pre-planned, with the accused closely observing the family’s movements.

The Marathahalli Police have registered a case under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (theft by clerk or servant) and formed multiple teams to trace the absconding accused. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined as efforts continue to recover the stolen valuables.
