Mirzapur Tragedy: Lovers Jump Into Ganga After Family Opposition, Search Underway
Mirzapur (U.P.): A heart-rending case of alleged suicide pact has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district, where two close relatives in a long-standing relationship leapt into the Ganga after their families opposed the match.
Police said Nikhil Kumar, a resident of Aghouli village (Dehat Kotwali) and employee of a private firm in Gujarat, and Kriti Chauhan, a Class 11 student from Dhourupur Pokhra, left a bag, mobile phone and documents on the Shastri Bridge in Katra Kotwali area before jumping hand-in-hand into the river.
Eyewitnesses alerted the police as crowds gathered at the bridge. Divers and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) immediately began a search operation, which continued late into the evening.
Family members revealed the two had been in love for years. Kriti, a distant aunt of Nikhil, faced opposition from her own family, though Nikhil’s side had agreed to the marriage. Hours before the plunge, Nikhil reportedly phoned his mother, saying, “We will live together and die together.”
Additional SP Nitesh Singh confirmed the intensive river search is ongoing, with no trace of the couple yet.
