Karur Rally Stampede: 39 Dead, Outrage Over Vijay’s Response

Karur, Tamil Nadu:

A massive stampede at TVK chief and South Indian actor Vijay’s political rally in Karur on September 27, 2025, left at least 39 people dead and over 50 injured, including women and children.

The tragedy unfolded when tens of thousands of supporters surged toward barricades during Vijay’s speech. Officials said the rally had nearly 60,000 attendees—double the expected capacity—creating dangerous overcrowding.

Police confirmed Vijay departed soon after the incident via Trichy airport on a chartered flight, sparking widespread outrage. Critics accused him of failing to meet victims’ families or visit hospitals before leaving. Four hours later, Vijay issued a social media statement expressing deep sorrow: “My heart is shattered… I extend my deepest condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur.”

Despite his message, backlash continued over the perceived insensitivity of his response.

Chief Minister MK Stalin announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured, and appointed former Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to head a one-man inquiry commission. Senior officials and ministers were dispatched to oversee relief and probe efforts.

The incident has drawn nationwide attention, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu offering condolences and demanding accountability.

Prominent film personalities, including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, expressed grief, while demands grew for stricter crowd management at political rallies.

Karur remains in shock as authorities continue rescue, relief, and investigation measures in what is now one of the deadliest stampedes in recent Indian political history.
