Police Commemoration Day: Honoring the Brave

Observed annually on October 21, Police Commemoration Day is a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering the sacrifices of police personnel who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. The day traces its origins to a tragic incident on this date in 1959, when 10 Indian police officers were killed during a skirmish with Chinese troops in Ladakh. Their valor and courage became a symbol of dedication, inspiring the country to recognize the ultimate sacrifices made by officers to protect national security and maintain law and order.

On this day, memorial services are held across the country, including at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi, where names of fallen officers are inscribed in honor of their bravery. Wreaths are laid, and moments of silence are observed to pay tribute to their memory.

Police Commemoration Day serves as a reminder of the crucial role law enforcement agencies play in safeguarding citizens, often under challenging and dangerous conditions. It also highlights the importance of supporting the families of fallen heroes, acknowledging their sacrifices, and fostering a culture of respect and gratitude for those who serve the nation with unwavering commitment.
