UN Security Council Endorses US-Authored Resolution Backing Ceasefire in Gaza

New York [US], June 11: Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East stemming from the prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution endorsing a US-led initiative for a lasting ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza on Monday (local time).

The resolution, drafted by the United States, urges Hamas to accept a ceasefire proposal put forward by President Joe Biden on May 31, which has already been agreed upon by Israel.

With 14 votes in favor and one abstention from Russia, the resolution outlines a three-phase plan aimed at achieving a comprehensive ceasefire agreement. The first phase calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages, and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners. It also emphasizes the need for Israeli troops to withdraw from populated areas in Gaza, allowing Palestinians to return to their homes and facilitating humanitarian aid distribution.

Phase Two entails a permanent cessation of hostilities in exchange for the release of remaining hostages and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Phase Three focuses on a long-term reconstruction plan for Gaza and the repatriation of deceased hostages to Israel.

President Biden hailed the deal as more than just a temporary ceasefire but a durable solution to the conflict. He confirmed that the terms had been conveyed to Hamas leadership through Qatar.

US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, emphasized the unity of the international community behind the endorsed deal, urging Hamas to seize the opportunity to save lives and rebuild Gaza.

The resolution also reaffirms the UN Security Council's stance against any attempts to alter the demographic or territorial status of Gaza and stresses its commitment to a two-state solution, including the unification of Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.

The conflict in Gaza escalated following an October 7 attack by Hamas, resulting in casualties and the taking of hostages. Israel has framed its offensive as targeting Hamas infrastructure while seeking to minimize civilian casualties.
