Prime Minister Modi Attends NDA Meeting in Parliament
Days after the Lok Sabha results were announced, a meeting of the newly elected MPs was held on Friday at Parliament, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Held at the Samvidhan Sadan of the Parliament building, the Prime Minister was welcomed with chants of 'Modi Modi.' Upon arrival, he respectfully touched the Constitution of India with his forehead.
JD(S) MP-elect HD Kumaraswamy supported the proposal to name Narendra Modi as the Leader of the NDA Parliamentary Party. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu praised Modi's tireless campaign efforts, attributing the NDA's success in Andhra Pradesh to his dedication.
After failing to secure a majority on its own, the BJP now depends on allies such as the TDP and JD(U). BJP MP Rajnath Singh endorsed Modi as the most suitable leader for the NDA, while BJP national president JP Nadda highlighted the coalition's electoral victories in states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
Nadda reflected on India's transformation over the past decade under Modi's leadership, stating that the country has moved from indifference to aspiration. Modi was greeted by TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar among other leaders. NCP (Ajit Pawar) Chief Ajit Pawar and LJP Chief Chirag Paswan were also present.
HD Kumaraswamy reiterated JD(S)'s support for Modi and the NDA, emphasizing the need for a stable government. He dismissed reports of demands from NDA allies, expressing confidence in a unified agreement.
On Wednesday, NDA leaders officially elected Modi as their leader, with Modi affirming the NDA's commitment to a developed India. Sources indicate Modi is likely to take the oath as Prime Minister for the third consecutive time on June 9. While there was earlier speculation about a Saturday swearing-in ceremony, there has been no official confirmation.
According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 240 seats, and along with its allies, the NDA stands at 293 seats. TDP and JD(U) have extended support with 16 and 12 seats respectively. The INDIA bloc has 234 MPs, with Congress winning 99 seats.
