Maharashtra Monsoon Alert: IMD Flags Sindhudurg with Red Alert
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 9: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for heavy rainfall in Maharashtra's picturesque Sindhudurg district, while Ratnagiri is under an orange alert, and Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad are on yellow alert for June 9.
The forecast warns of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate to heavy spells of rain, along with gusty winds sweeping across these regions. With the regional IMD office in Mumbai emphasizing caution due to the anticipated severe weather conditions, residents are urged to take necessary precautions.
According to the district forecast, "Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate to heavy spells of rain, with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, are very likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts over the next 3-4 hours (starting from 04:00 am on Sunday)."
As the nation braces for the monsoon onslaught, IMD advises the public to stay vigilant while venturing outdoors.
In the early hours of Sunday, Mumbai witnessed rainfall, adding to the awaited weather activity.
Earlier reports from IMD suggested the southwest monsoon's advancement into various parts of the central Arabian Sea, south Maharashtra, Telangana, south Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
With favorable conditions projected for the southwest monsoon to further progress into the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra (including Mumbai), and Telangana over the next 2-3 days, the nation gears up for the annual weather phenomenon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting on Sunday to assess the ongoing heatwave situation and the country's preparedness for the monsoon's arrival.
This year's monsoon onset is two days earlier than usual, with Kerala already experiencing widespread pre-monsoon rains.
In 2023, the country received rainfall equivalent to 94 per cent of its long-period average during the monsoon season (June-September).
