Former Trump Defense Official Warns Against Chinese Surprise Attack on Taiwan

Taipei [Taiwan], June 9: Elbridge Colby, a former US defense official, has warned that China might launch an attack on Taiwan with little warning, according to Taiwan News. Colby, who served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy and force development in 2017-2018 under President Donald Trump, suggested that China has abandoned hopes for peaceful unification with Taiwan.

Colby, a potential candidate for a national security role if Trump wins the upcoming presidential election, emphasized the need for a strengthened military to counter potential Chinese aggression. He noted that Chinese leader Xi Jinping likely believes that peaceful unification with Taiwan is impossible. Colby also mentioned that a cross-strait conflict could involve US troops in the Asia Pacific region, as well as forces from Japan, Australia, and the Philippines.

While some commentators argue that China would find it difficult to launch a surprise attack due to the extensive preparations required, Colby advised the US to prioritize its support for Taiwan over Ukraine, given Asia's strategic importance. He suggested that Europe is better equipped to handle Russia independently than Asia would be in facing China.

Earlier this month, China's Minister of National Defense, Admiral Dong Jun, warned against "external forces" emboldening Taiwan independence separatists. He claimed these actions are dragging Taiwan into a dangerous situation and stated that anyone attempting to separate Taiwan from China would face severe consequences.

Following the inauguration of Taiwan's Vice President Lai Ching-te, China conducted two-day military drills around Taiwan, which it described as "punishment" for separatist actions. The drills were a response to Lai's speech urging Beijing to stop intimidating Taiwan, over which China claims sovereignty .
