Amit Shah Assumes Office as Union Minister in Prime Minister Modi's 3.0 Cabinet
New Delhi [India], June 9: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony for his third consecutive term at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday evening, Amit Shah, a close ally, was inducted into the Union Cabinet.
President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to Amit Anilchandra Shah as a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet, making him the second minister to take the oath after Rajnath Singh.
Shah, a 59-year-old BJP leader and key strategist, previously served as the Union Home Minister in the Modi government. His landslide victory in Gujarat's Gandhinagar seat in the 2023 Lok Sabha elections further solidified his political standing, defeating Congress' Sonal Patel by a significant margin.
In his role as Union Home Minister, Shah notably spearheaded the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and played a pivotal role in passing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, aimed at providing citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries.
A seasoned politician, Shah's journey in public service began at the age of 16 when he joined as a young Swayamsevak of the Sangh. Over the years, he held various positions within the BJP, culminating in his appointment as the party's National President in 2014, a role he held until 2020.
His political career in Gujarat saw him rise through the ranks, from serving as a polling agent in 1984 to becoming an MLA in 1997, a position he held until 2012 with increasing margins of victory in each election.
Shah's influence extended beyond Gujarat, notably as the in-charge of Uttar Pradesh during the 2014 elections, where he played a crucial role in the BJP's electoral strategy.
His leadership within the BJP, coupled with his strategic acumen, has cemented his position as a prominent figure in Indian politics, culminating in his appointment as Home Minister in the re-elected Modi government in 2019.
