FPIs Offload Over Rs 25,000 Crore in Indian Stocks in May, Becoming Net Sellers for Second Consecutive Month

Image
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) significantly increased their selling activity in Indian stock markets in May, resulting in a net outflow of Rs 25,586 crore by the end of the month. This persistent withdrawal from Indian stocks is partly due to a strong US dollar, stubbornly high inflation—especially in the food sector—and uncertainties related to election outcomes. However, recent trading sessions have shown a slowdown in FPI selling, likely influenced by the strong performance of market indices. Both Nifty and Sensex reached all-time highs recently, yielding substantial gains for investors. Data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) indicated that cumulative FPI selling was around Rs 28,000 crore a week ago. "FPIs have been selling equities on most trading days in May. According to NSDL data, FPIs sold equities worth Rs 25,586 crore in May," stated VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. Vijayakumar identified the primar...

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been sent to judicial custody until June 5, 2024, following his surrender to Tihar Jail as per Supreme Court directions. This decision was made by Duty Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal at the Rouse Avenue Court on Sunday. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had applied for Kejriwal’s judicial custody, which was pending as he had been on interim bail. After his surrender, the court extended his custody by 14 days, responding to an ED application filed on May 20. Kejriwal's legal team, led by advocates Rishikesh Kumar and Vivek Jain, opposed the custody extension, arguing that his arrest has been challenged before the Supreme Court, with an order on his petition still pending. Kejriwal had previously sought a 7-day interim bail citing medical reasons, but the court reserved its decision until June 5. The ED contested Kejriwal's interim bail plea, questioning its maintainability and alleging that Kejriwal was traveling instead of undergoing a medical te...
