Wedding Turns Into War: Dowry Demand, Bride Walks Out, Groom Alleges Hostage Drama in Bareilly
Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh): What was meant to be the happiest day of a couple’s life descended into chaos after the groom allegedly demanded a car and ₹20 lakh as dowry moments before the wedding vows, leading to police intervention and the marriage being called off.
According to reports, the groom demanded a Brezza car and ₹20 lakh in cash just before the wedding rituals, stating that he would not proceed with the marriage unless his demands were met. The sudden demand caused panic at the venue, following which the police were called.
Witnessing her family’s distress, the bride refused to go ahead with the marriage. Quoted by Dainik Bhaskar, she said she did not wish to marry “dowry-greedy people” and could not spend her life with someone who disrespected and humiliated her family in front of the guests.
Police detained the groom and his brother-in-law for questioning. However, no formal complaint was filed by the bride’s family.
The couple had got engaged in May, during which the bride’s family allegedly spent around ₹3 lakh. It is also claimed that the groom had already received a gold ring, a chain, and ₹5 lakh in cash. Additionally, the bride’s family reportedly gave an air conditioner, refrigerator, washing machine, household items, jewellery, and ₹1.20 lakh.
The wedding was scheduled for Friday. The wedding procession arrived and rituals were completed up to the stage of taking wedding vows, when the fresh dowry demand was allegedly made.
In a major twist, the groom, identified as Rishabh Saxena (29), has denied the allegations. He claimed that he was body-shamed by the bride’s family and later by the bride herself. He further alleged that his family members were held hostage on the wedding day, jewellery and valuables were looted, and that the bride’s family is now demanding ₹50 lakh after the wedding was cancelled.
Police said the matter is under verification and further action will be taken based on evidence.
