Karva Chauth Tragedy: Elderly Couple Ends Life After Argument in Aligarh

Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh): A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Mohammadpur Badhera village under the Atrauli police station area on Karva Chauth, where an elderly couple — 72-year-old Puran Singh and his wife 70-year-old Chameli Devi — allegedly ended their lives after an argument.

According to reports, the couple had been married for over 50 years and often quarreled. On the morning of the incident, they reportedly had another dispute. Later, Puran Singh asked Chameli Devi to accompany him to Ramghat for a bath in the Ganges. Initially hesitant, Chameli Devi eventually agreed.

Around 8 a.m., the couple left home and reached the ghat. After bathing in the Ganges, at about 10 a.m., Puran Singh allegedly poisoned Chameli Devi’s food and then consumed the same poison himself. Within minutes, both collapsed on the riverbank.

Locals immediately informed the Ramghat police, who arrived at the spot and rushed the couple to the hospital. However, Puran Singh was declared dead on the scene, while Chameli Devi succumbed on the way to the hospital.

Family members revealed that Puran Singh, a labourer by profession, lived in the village with his wife, daughter-in-law Rajkumari, grandsons Vidya Sagar and Nirbhay, and granddaughter Krishna. His son Ashok works in Ghaziabad, while his daughter Pushpa is married in Khurd Kheda.

Villagers have expressed shock and sorrow over the incident. While some believe the tragedy was the result of a domestic dispute, others suspect deeper emotional reasons behind the couple’s drastic step. The deaths on Karva Chauth, a day symbolising love and devotion between husband and wife, have cast a shadow of grief over the entire village.
