ECI Orders Action Against Uddhav Thackeray for Model Code Violation

Mumbai: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated an investigation into Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray's remarks against the Election Commission during a press conference on May 20, following a complaint by the BJP.

Thackeray had accused the EC of bias and alleged that the Narendra Modi government was using the election body as its "house help." He also claimed that the voting process in Mumbai was deliberately slowed to frustrate anti-Modi voters. The BJP lodged a complaint asserting that Thackeray violated the Model Code of Conduct by holding a press conference while voting was ongoing and making defamatory statements against the EC.

BJP leader Ashish Shelar, in his complaint, stated, “By making baseless allegations against the EC and the BJP, Thackeray has violated the code of conduct. He also made false and misleading statements in the press conference.”

In response, the ECI requested details from the Maharashtra election commission regarding the press conference. An English translation of Thackeray's statements has been sent to the ECI for scrutiny.

BJP legislator Pravin Darekar commented, “It is a breach of model code of conduct to make statements that will influence voters while voting is still on. The complaint by Ashish Shelar has merit, and the ECI has taken cognizance of it. The ECI will take action against Uddhav Thackeray as per its rules. Law is the same for everyone and nobody is above the law, including Uddhav Thackeray.”

The ECI will review whether Thackeray’s statements breached the Model Code of Conduct and determine the next steps accordingly.
